George Rucker's Newsletter for November 22, 2016

Greetings once again,

I hope everyone got to see the full moon last weekend.  If you watched the Pats/Seahawks football game they showed if a few times during the night.  They say the moon was closest to the earth since 1948.  Anyway it was a clear crisp night and the moon was pleasant to look at..

I have a late blooming Shasta daisy plant on my deck.  I will post it to my FaceBook page.  It looks like a Daisy but think it is in the mum family due to the shape of the leaves.  For some reason this plant runs late every year.  Mid November is quite late for any flowers to bloom.

I have been having a kitchen make-over, it has been in the mill for about 10 years now.  I guess this is due to so many choices.  The cabinet color is cognac, go figure.  The style is Charlotsville, the granite is a riverbed type of brown and black pattern and the appliances are all black.  I have a single spigot faucet/sprayer so only one hole will be drilled in the stone.  So far no knobs have been picked out but we have over a week to pick them out, before our carpenter returns from his Maine hunting trip.  I guess all is going as planned.  All that was needed was for Patty to stop working.  Next stop will be getting her to start exercising.

Next thing is the weekly invention that changed mankind.  During my life again I have worked on the edges of this invention.  It caused me to have a different type of clearance.  Not the type for Secret, Top Secret or Sensitive Information but the ability to work in the area with nuclear bombs in the vicinity.  I found this funny and not that worrisome as my home was within a half a mile, so not only did I work in the area but I slept in the area.  All the areas I worked in were called “No Lone Zones.”  I worked on the pre-launch and air control of “Guided Missiles,” but not the missile itself.

A bomber pilot expressed the significance of the guided missile to a reporter for the New York Times in 1991: “War has changed completely, for better or worse.  The side with the smartest gadgets will always win.”

Precision-guided bombs play a decisive role in modern warfare, allowing countries to invade others with minimal risk.  Miniature computers guide the bomb or missile toward its target, using feedback systems to change the course if necessary.

When a fighter plane releases a bomb, the plane uses its infrared radar to view the target and directs a laser beam that locks on the target.  The bomb’s light sensing nose divides the view into quadrants and measures the intensity of the laser light on the target.  If all four quadrants have the same amount, the bomb is on track; if not, the computer makes a correction.  Seconds later the target is destroyed.

Guided missiles first emerged during World War II, when Germany experimented with Fritz-X, a bomb directed by radio signals to hit ships at sea.  The U.S. Air Force also experimented with different guided weapons and made several successful attacks.  However, the early prototypes had little practical effects during the war.  For the remainder of the 20th century, the U.S. military attempted to fine-tune different missiles, succeeding in developing weapons that could find their target and elude detection.

During the 1990 Gulf War, the United States severely weakened the Iraqi army while suffering comparably few casualties.  America’s accurate bombs easily found small targets like tanks and personnel carriers, with one military spokesman estimating that less than one-tenth of 1 percent of all guided missiles hit civilian areas, according to the New York Times.  The guided missiles were even able to hit planes or helicopters, a moving target considered impossible before.

Many military experts declared this a new era of warfare, in which guided missiles could nullify the previous advantages held by tanks or large numbers of infantry.  The accuracy of the guided missile has come to create immense fear in targets – and equal confidence in those who wield it.

The first remote-controlled device was built by Nikola Tesla, a Croatian-born engineer and inventor.  His idea was soon applied to guided missiles, using instructions from a wireless remote-control transmitter that could detonate an explosive charge at a safe distance.

Here are some tips for cake mix users.   Four Brilliant Tricks to Improve Your Boxed Cake Mix.

In an ideal world we’d all have the time, the patience and the resources to make every cake from scratch, but we all know that sometimes, we just have to go the boxed route. That doesn’t mean our cakes have to be subpar! Rachael Ray is here with ways to hack your boxed cake mix to make cakes just as delicious as anything from a bakery or from scratch. Watch the video for her tips, then read on for even more!

Did you catch all of those tips? To recap:

For chocolate cake, if the box calls for water, use hot water. It’ll wake up the flavor and make it more chocolatey.
Add two extra egg yolks – no matter how many eggs are required – for extra moisture and density.
Does the recipe call for vegetable oil? Ignore that instruction and use melted butter instead! Your cake will be richer and more flavorful.
You know how if you make a multilayer cake, you have to slice off the top of one or more of the layers? Prevent wasted cake by sprinkling sugar over the top to prevent the cake from rising too much.

For even more boxed cake hacks, watch the video and head over to Rachael Ray’s site for even more, including ones especially for white cakes, chocolate cakes and all cakes! Do you have any of your own to add? When do you use boxed cake mix and when do you bake from scratch?

People born before 1946 are called - The Greatest Generation .

People born between 1946 and 1964 are called - The Baby Boomers .

People born between 1965 and 1979 are called - Generation X.

And people born between 1980 and 2010 are called - Generation Y .

Why do we call the last group -Generation Y ?

Y should I get a job?

Y should I leave home and find my own place?

Y should I get a car when I can borrow yours?

Y should I clean my room?

Y should I wash and iron my own clothes?

Y should I buy any food?

But perhaps a cartoonist explained it most eloquently with a picture of a butt crack above the pants warn almost to the knees.  (Sorry I could not figure out how to put in a picture)

Stephen Hawking believes that humanity has less than a thousand years on Earth before a mass extinction occurs, the leading theoretical physicist said during a speech Tuesday at Oxford University Union, U.K.

According to Hawking, the only way humans can avoid the possibility of extinction was to find another planet to inhabit. At the talk, Hawking gave a one-hour speech on man's understanding of the origin of the universe from primordial creation myths to the most cutting-edge predictions made by "M-theory," which presents an idea about the basic substance of the universe.

“We must also continue to go into space for the future of humanity,” he said. “I don’t think we will survive another 1000 without escaping beyond our fragile planet.”

Earlier this year, the 74-year-old predicted that technology would lead Earth to a virtually inevitable global cataclysm.

“We face a number of threats to our survival from nuclear war, catastrophic global warming, and genetically engineered viruses,” he said in January. “The number is likely to increase in the future, with the development of new technologies, and new ways things can go wrong. Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time.”

Hawking reportedly added that finding another planet was the only chance of survival.

“[We] have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race,” he said. “However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period.”

Since 2009, NASA has been working to discover Earth-like planets that can support life.

The discovery of more than 2,000 planets has been confirmed so far and over 4,500 “planet candidates” are waiting to have their existence confirmed.

“The first exoplanet orbiting another star like our sun was discovered in 1995,” according to NASA. “Exoplanets, especially small Earth-size worlds, belonged within the realm of science fiction just 21 years ago. Today, and thousands of discoveries later, astronomers are on the cusp of finding something people have dreamt about for thousands of years.”

I have been thinking about this article and personally think that the population of the earth will not just die.  If it does it will be a slow process just like where we are today from our start, thousand of years.

I always get the Bacon Brothers confused.  So I made myself this cheat sheet:

A guy calls a company and orders their 5-day, 5kg weight loss program.

The next day, there's a knock on the door and there stands before him a voluptuous, athletic, 19 year old babe dressed in nothing but a pair of Nike running shoes and a sign around her neck..

She introduces herself as a representative of the weight loss company. The sign reads, "If you can catch me, you can have me."

Without a second thought, he takes off after her. A few miles later puffing and puffing, he finally gives up. The same girl shows up for the next four days and the same thing happens. On the fifth day, he weighs himself and is delighted to find he has lost 5kg as promised.

He calls the company and orders their 5-day/10kg program. The next day there's a knock at the door and there stands the most stunning, beautiful, sexy woman he has ever seen in his life. She is wearing nothing but Reebok running shoes and a sign around her neck that reads, "If you catch me you can have me".

Well, he's out the door after her like a shot. This girl is in excellent shape and he does his best, but no such luck. So for the next four days, the same routine happens with him gradually getting in better and better shape.

Much to his delight on the fifth day when he weighs himself, he discovers that he has lost another 10kg as promised. He decides to go for broke and calls the company to order the 7-day/25kg program.

"Are you sure?" asks the representative on the phone. "This is our most rigorous program." "Absolutely," he replies, "I haven't felt this good in years."

The next day there's a knock at the door; and when he opens it he finds a huge muscular guy standing there wearing nothing but pink running shoes and a sign around his neck that reads, "If I catch you, you are mine."

He lost 33 kilos that week.

A priest, a minister, and a rabbi want to see who’s best at his job. So they each go into the woods, find a bear, and attempt to convert it. Later they get together. The priest begins: "When I found the bear, I read to him from the Catechism and sprinkled him with holy water. Next week is his First Communion."

"I found a bear by the stream," says the minister, "and preached God’s holy word. The bear was so mesmerized that he let me baptize him."

They both look down at the rabbi, who is lying on a gurney in a body cast. "Looking back," he says, "maybe I shouldn’t have started with the circumcision."

There was a lady in her 90s who became a sort of local celebrity because she had recently gotten married.  The local news station decided to interview her.  The interviewer asked questions like how it was to be a newly wed in her 90s.

“This isn’t my first husband, so it’s not much different than the others,” she said with a smile.

“Oh/ How many husbands have you had?” the interviewer inquired.”

“This one will be my fourth,” she replied. “I was married in my 20s to a banker, then in my 40s to a circus performer.  After that I married a preacher.”

“What does your current husband do?”

“Oh, he’s a funeral director.”

The interviewer laughed and then asked how she came to marry these men from such different backgrounds and personalities.

“It always made sense to me,” she replied.  “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”

Do you have some old latex paint to dispose of?  Here is the way to get rid of it.  This is information from one of my many hats warn during my life.  Recycling Program Manager.

Latex paint is a popular, affordable and durable choice for a variety of home-improvement projects. A mixture of synthetic resins, solvents and coloring dissolved in water, latex paint does not contain any actual latex as we know it. Mention latex and most minds turn to the surgical gloves and latex allergies. Latex paint, however, does not cause latex allergies because it doesn't contain natural rubber--the type of latex found in medical gloves and other natural latex items.

Over 1 billion gallons of paint and similar coatings are consumed in the U.S. each year. Which poses the question--what do you do latex paint when you are done with it? As of 1992, latex paint can not contain mercury; therefore, it is not considered a hazardous material. Yet even though latex paint is not considered hazardous, it cannot be disposed of in liquid form, as it could make a mess. Latex paint can be recycled or collected through your local household-waste program, but it must be prepared accordingly before pickup. According to the National Paint & Coatings Association, latex paint is "the largest volume waste collected by metropolitan household waste programs."

Things You'll Need

    Cat litter
    Paint-hardening crystals

Add one part cat litter, sand or sawdust, or paint-drying crystals to one part leftover latex paint.

Allow the paint and absorbent material to sit uncovered until the mixture has fully hardened. If your paint container is less than 1/4 full, you may be able to leave the lid off and allow the paint to air-dry in the container without adding absorbent materials.

Place the paint, with the lid off, in the regular trash.

Consider recycling the paint if you are unable to follow Steps 1 to 3. Contact your local hazardous-materials program or recycling center to find a place near you that accepts latex paint.

Tips & Warnings

Buy the smallest quantity of paint required to complete a given project, to avoid excess leftovers.

Donate leftover latex paint to local groups, such as schools or theaters, if your community does not have a paint-recycling program.

Mix a small amount of colored paint with leftover neutral paint to create a new color for further use.

Do not pour left over paint down the sink, as it will contaminate groundwater and disrupt the local ecosystem.

Do not place liquid paint in your trash. It could spill during collection and stain your alley or sidewalk.

Our country gives out an award named the “Presidential Medal of Freedom.”  This will be Obama’s last time to give them out.  This award is the highest civilian honor awarded to a person.  It is considered to be a great honor and to some people ranks up with the “Medal of Honor” which is given for heroism in the military.

The Nation's highest civilian honor is presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. The awards will be presented at the White House on November 22.

President Barack Obama has named 21 recipients of this year's Presidential Medal of Freedom. Comedian Ellen DeGeneres, actor Tom Hanks and NBA star Michael Jordan are among the class of 2016. Other honorees include Robert De Niro, Robert Redford, Lorne Michaels, Diana Ross and Bruce Springsteen.

I had to stop and see if I would agree to the selected winners as I do not think this award should be political tool.  In the military the Medal of Honor has very strict rules for the award.  I feel the same should be true for this award.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the National Basketball Association’s all-time leading scorer who helped lead the Los Angeles Lakers to five championships and the Milwaukee Bucks to another. During his career, Abdul-Jabbar was a six-time NBA Most Valuable Player and a 19-time NBA All-Star. Before joining the NBA, he was a star player at UCLA, leading the Bruins to three consecutive championships. In addition to his legendary basketball career, Abdul-Jabbar has been an outspoken advocate for social justice.....................sorry do not agree, that is what the Basket Ball Hall of Fame is for.

Elouise Cobell was a Blackfeet Tribal community leader and an advocate for Native American self-determination and financial independence.  She used her expertise in accounting to champion a lawsuit that resulted in a historic settlement, restoring tribal homelands to her beloved Blackfeet Nation and many other tribes, and in so doing, inspired a new generation of Native Americans to fight for the rights of others.  Cobell helped found the Native American Bank, served as director of the Native American Community Development Corporation, and inspired Native American women to seek leadership roles in their communities. ..................This could get my vote as for one the Native Americans have not been given a fair break.  I need to read more than just this paragraph.

Ellen DeGeneres is an award-winning comedian who has hosted her popular daytime talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, since 2003 with her trademarked humor, humility, and optimism. In 2003 Ellen lent her voice to a forgetful but unforgettable little fish named Dory in Finding Nemo. She reprised her role again in 2016 with the hugely successful Finding Dory. Ellen also hosted the Academy Awards twice, in 2007 and 2014. In 1997, after coming out herself, DeGeneres made TV history when her character on Ellen revealed she was a lesbian. In her work and in her life, she has been a passionate advocate for equality and fairness. ............again do not agree.  I do think she should get an award for her showmanship but not this one.

Richard Garwin is a polymath physicist who earned a Ph.D. under Enrico Fermi at age 21 and subsequently made pioneering contributions to U.S. defense and intelligence technologies, low-temperature and nuclear physics, detection of gravitational radiation, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computer systems, laser printing, and nuclear arms control and nonproliferation. He directed Applied Research at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Research Center and taught at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, and Harvard University. The author of 500 technical papers and a winner of the National Medal of Science, Garwin holds 47 U.S. patents, and has advised numerous administrations. ................... totally agree

I will try to make it a point to look at the list next week but I am at the end of my nine page letter.
